Tuscany and Versilia: pearl of Thyrrhene

In the XII century Viareggio was a port of call, in that period was built the high cylindrical tower on the Viam Regiam ("Royal street" from which Viareggio may derive its name). Today around the port live the fishers' village, but the rest of the town (60.000 citizens) has a rather modern aspect. Viareggio is extremely tied to the tradition of its carnival which is over a hundred years old: in a two kilometers long ring defile the big allegoric vans created for the occasion and centred on political satire.Camaiore is one of the oldest villages of Versilia and was built in 1255 on a Roman hamlet. From here you may go for excurtions on the Apuane Alps or at mid-coast, but you should also see the Collegiata church (1278) with its Bells Tower of 1365.

A laughter to close our itinerary: a visit in Forte dei Marmi and in its Forte Museum for Satire and Caricature. It was created in 1973, together with the most important national satire competiton, in the Leopoldo I Fortress and it became a centre for the collection and the study of the mondial history of satire and caricature. The fortress is the symbol monument of the town, it was built by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopoldo I di Lorena to protect this area which was being reclaimed and to encourage urban settlement. Close to the sea you may also see the charger pier once used to charge the huge marble blocks going everywhere in the world and nowadays simple tourist destination.
