Valcamonica: vacation to the Iseo Lake the earth of Camuni
We leave from Iseo lake, one of the nicest in Lombardia, to enter Valcamonica and discover the mystery of the ancient Camuni people. We will go through wonderful landscapes, Medieval villages and above all we will visit the largest archeological area in Italy presenting rupestrian engravings: Capo di Ponte. There extends an extraordinary outdoor museum about the most remote Alpine civilization.

Valcamonica is the widest Italian valley and counts 10.000 years of history. It used to be called the Magli valley (mallets valley) because of the diffusion of metal artifacts processing. Nowadays it is mostly known for the rupestrian engravings left by the Camuni polulations in the area of Capo di Ponte: about 200.000 engravings telling the history of these lands from Palaeolithic to Roman times, a unique case as for temporal continuity. But the valley also offers evocative Medieval villages, rests of Roman times and delightful landscapes. The valley is about 80 kilometers long and opens North-West of Brescia. It starts in the Northern point of Iseo lake (also said Sebino) and follows the course of Oglio river.

Capo di Ponte was set under the Unesco tutelage as Humanity Heritage for the wonderful engravings preserved in the Naquane National Park (tel. ++39/0364/42212) and in the Camuno Centre of Prehistorical Studies that organizes and coordinates the campaigns of research and excavation. One of the images recurring in the rupestrian engravings, the so-called Camuni rose, has become the symbol of Lombardia, its most ancient picture was detected on a rock in Crape.
